Why does education need Assessment 2.0?

  • The students of today are Digital Natives. They think and learn differently.

  • The Digital Natives:
    • prefer active learning rather than eye_google_400.jpgpassive receipt of knowledge
    • desire authentic learning experiences rather than contrived tasks
    • would rather construct their own knowledge rather than receive instruction
    • are task (not process) oriented
    • are inclined to search, not memorize
    • utilize social networks
    • prefer to Google rather than go to the library
    • collaborate, not compete
    • depend upon "just in time learning"

  • Different modes of learning call for different modes of assessment. Web 2.0 technologies offer opportunities for authentic and social assessment.
  • The use of Web 2.0 tools in instruction and assessment increases student engagement in class and creates a learning atmosphere where students are excited about learning.
